Attacking the ABCs

The children learn the English alphabet, focusing on the names of the letters, how to form them and the sounds they make. We continuously review the letters through games and revision activities. I encourage the children to notice the letters and sounds in their homes. By the end of this program the children are reading basic CVC (3-letter) words and have taken their first steps towards independent reading.

Friendly Phonics

For those children that are already familiar with the alphabet, we work through all the phonic rules.

We focus on blending sounds and noticing letter patterns to become independent readers. The children receive weekly reading cards to consolidate what they have learned in the lessons. These become more challenging as the children progress through the rules.

Be Guided by Grammar

Once the children are independent readers and writers they need to focus on correct sentence structure and higher level spelling rules.

Here is an example of just some of the guidelines of grammar that we will study.

•parts of speech

•tenses

•homophones

•contractions

•compound words

•prefixes and suffixes

•synonyms and antonyms

Connecting with Comprehensions

By using a variety of media and texts the children are encouraged to carefully read and complete comprehensions.

We focus on writing full detailed answers that show understanding of the texts. They study both fiction and non-fiction pieces to learn how to sequence events, compare, make conclusions and predictions.

Creative Content and Resourceful Writing

Something many children struggle with is creative writing. We work together through the stages of writing to construct a piece of work that is both interesting and descriptive. We first look at the characters that will be used and how to bring them to life. We then focus on story structure, building the setting, organising paragraphs and any dialogue that will be used. The children also learn the skill of proofreading and editing their work.
